(BISMILAAHI   R'RAHMAANI   R'RAHEEM)

Dear Br. Khalid Shaukat,

Assalaamu alaikkum wa Rahmathullaahi wa Barakaathu hu

In your web-site you have announced that the first hilaal of Ramdhaan will be
seen from many parts of the world on Wednesday, 17th June.

Authentic hadeeth says that the hilaal seen belongs to the day on which  it was seen. It is not
the one for the following day.   If it is seen on a Wednesday, it belongs to Wednesday
or in other words, it belongs to the day-light part of Wednesday or more vividly it
can be said that it marks the end of the first day's fast (in Ramdhaan).

You may please refer Tafsir Ibn Kathir where it is explained that the hilaal seen after sun-set
was the moon which rose in the morning,  just after Sun-rise, followed the Sun and
appeared after sun-set.  Sahaba (RA) knew about this astronomical truth.

We are quoting the relevant portion (Verse 91:1-2)  of Tafsir Ibn Kathir, for your ready reference:

" ' Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas (RA) that he said, (By the moon as it Talaha.) "It follows  the
day (sun).'' Qatadah said, "`as it Talaha (follows it)' is referring to the night of the Hilal
(the new crescent moon). When the sun goes down, the Hilal is visible.''
So, it is crystal clear that the Sahaba (RA) were aware that the Moon rises after Sun on the first day,
follows the Sun and becomes visible after Sun-set.  They (RA) were also aware  that if they
waited for the hilaal to appear in order to start the new month, they will lose the day-light part of
the first day in which one has to observe the fast of the first day (in case of Ramdhaan) and in which
one must celebrate Eid (in case of Shawwal). They (RA) were also aware that if they waited for
the hilaal in order to start the new month, they will commit the sin of fasting on the Eid day
(in case of Shawwal) which is haraam.

You admit that the first hilaal of Ramdhaan 1436 appears on Wednesday, 17th June.  As per the
explanation in Tafsir Ibn Kathir,  this hilaal  appears after the day-light part of the first day
(Wednesday) is over.  Thereby millions of Muslims will be deprived of the virtues of first day's
fasting, if did not fast during the day-light part of Wednesday  !!

In this context please remember that if one loses one day's fast in Ramdhaan, without valid
reasons of travel or illness,  it cannot be compensated  fully even if one fasts for the rest of one's
 life  !!!

If you insist that the hilaal appeared on Wednesday belongs to Thursday's fasting, please
produce authentic hadeeth to prove that the hilaal seen on a day does not belong to the day
in which it was seen but, belongs to the following day.

AND/OR

If you insist that the hilaal appears on the last day of the month, at Magrib, you may please
produce any authentic hadeeth to prove that the hilaal appears on the last day of a lunar month.

AND/OR

Prove wrong what Imam Ibn Kathir (Rah) explained about Sahaba (RA) knowing "wal qamari
izzaa talaaha ..." (verse 91:1-2) .

If you cannot produce such authentic hadeeths or prove Imam Ibn Kathir (Rah) wrong, then please
accept  the truth that the first hilaal appears after the day-light part of the first day is over.

May Almighty Allaah keep all of us in the Right Path. Aameen

Wa Salaam
